CRIMINAL VANDALISM IN DOUGLAS MANOR

In 2005, there was an article entitled 'Summer Vandalism' reporting three major incidents of vandalism not usually encountered in Douglas Manor. There were two incidents of tires being punctured and one incident of willful destruction of a fence gate.

Now, more than a year later, it saddens us to report that we have suffered a larger number of similar acts, where additional tires have been punctured and one new car was 'keyed' (a deep gash was gouged along the entire side of the car) twice. A Service Station on Northern that replaced some of the tires indicated that the damage was not from road hazards, but more likely from a sharp, thin pick piercing the sidewalls of the tires, that produce a slow leak which cannot be repaired, and most be replaced at substantial cost and inconvenience. In total, we have received reports that up to 30 tires have been replaced. The accumulated damage assessment may well exceed $10,000, including the car keying.

Most of this vandalism does not seem to be random. Six of the nine known victims are current or recent members of the Douglas Manor Board of Directors. This suggests a possible connection between these incidents and the Board's performance of its duties with respect to the recent enforcement of the specific restrictive covenants, which are included in the deeds of all DMA properties. Unfortunately some DMA residents try to circumvent these restrictions and resist their enforcement, often at substantial cost to DMA residents. Three other known victims, who are not Board members, live in close proximity to each other.

For the safety and security of all Manor residents, the NYC Police Department has been advised of all of the facts known to the Board, and is investigating the matter. Further, the Board has directed our security service to be alert to this problem and to increase its patrol efforts in areas of the Manor that appear to be most at risk.

The DMA believes that these acts are reprehensible, and may be intended by the perpetrator(s) to intimidate the victims. Such behavior threatens the safety of all residents and degrades the civility and quality of our lives, which has made the Manor such a desirable place in which to live for more than 100 years.

A number of concerned Manor residents are offering a cash reward of $6,000 for information that identifies and leads to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for these specific acts! That reward offer will be posted on the DMA's website HTTP://WWW.DMANYC.ORG.

The DMA requests that all DMA residents be vigilant for this kind of behavior and that anyone who witnesses vandalism of any kind, immediately call our security at 646-335-6363 and Officers Gary Poggiali or Bill Conway of the 111th Precinct at (718) 279-5295. All callers' names will remain strictly confidential.

The above notice was sanctioned by The Board of Directors of the DMA, February 14, 2007
